Will swapping out electric car batteries catch on?
An alternative to charging your electric car has been introduced to help with the rise in electric cars. Nio has introduced the technology to swap electric car batteries for a new one instead of plugging in to charging constantly. The technology is already widespread in China, with the first Europe station south of Oslo.
The company hopes that this will encourage more people to invest in an electric car, appealing to customers with worries about their range. The swapping of the battery takes less than five minutes and is straightforward.
Espen Byrjall, Nio’s power and operations manager in Norway, says it’s partnered with energy giant Shell, to roll them out across Europe, with the aim of installing 1000 by 2025. “It’s going to be a network that lets you drive all over Europe.”
