We recently moved house and while I was looking through the 100’s of books we had in our loft…
I discovered a nursery rhyme book from my childhood and the first rhyme I read started with the line “A man of words and not of deeds is like a garden full of weeds.”
That immediately got me thinking about how many times, in business, we say we are going to do something and never take that action to make it happen?
Don’t get me wrong, you need a good plan of action, you need to discuss what you are going to do, but what often lacks is the implementation to make the plan happen.
If you don’t take action, that crucial next step, then you are wasting your potential.
If you find yourself not taking action regularly, then you are in danger of being an ineffective business owner – here are 5 signs you are, in fact, ineffective:
- You never plan – you don’t plan anything; from your business right down to your daily life. You take decisions but don’t measure these against your plan, so it’s hard to see what you are achieving.
- You lack focus – You find it difficult to get things done because you can’t focus on what needs to be done. You are easily distracted and since modern life is full of distractions you seem to be distracted all of the time.
- You don’t make lists – If you do make list then you don’t follow them through – lists are great but ineffective people don’t use them or if they do they start to use them and then don’t follow through to the end. Probably because they have been distracted by something else.
- You are dis-organised – You can’t organise your work-space, your diary, your staff or even your daily life. This manifests itself in all aspects of life. An example of this is being late for appointments or forgetting birthdays and anniversaries.
- You are overwhelmed by the amount of work you have – In modern times, stuff comes at you from every angle – family is more demanding, your phone beeps at you, demanding attention, your friends require your attention, your Facebook “friends” keep you constantly updated on their lives . All of these things add pressure to you until it can become too much. Ineffective people are caught, like a rabbit in the headlights, not taking action because of the weight of all these attention grabbing things.
If you are ineffective, there is every chance your business will mirror these traits until you do something about it.
If you are truly ineffective, I am sorry to say, there is only one person that can make the change and that’s you.
